Christmas is a time known for old traditions like tree lightings, caroling and gift giving, but the modern world has added a few more rituals for families to enjoy together. One of those activities, although you will never see it on a Christmas card or read about it in a Santa story, is the family movie night.

It’s no coincidence that Hollywood releases a bunch of blockbusters over the holiday season. With people getting time off from work and school to enjoy their winter vacations, there are plenty of opportunities for families to catch a matinee between shopping trips or go out for a nice Christmas dinner and a show. Or even better for chilly weather, spend a night in and hold a family movie night by renting some classic Christmas films or some family favorites.

Guests at Bay View Resort have both options available.  Pop some popcorn and pick up some snacks for a more authentic movie night, and check out some holiday classics like “Home Alone”, “It’s A Wonderful Life”, “A Christmas Story”, and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” For an afternoon or evening out on the town, catch these new releases for December 2015:
“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip”: The fury little critters are back for more hilarious holiday high jinks in the latest installment of this animated series. Alvin, Simon and Theodore hit the road for the trio’s musical tour but find themselves caught in a love triangle with their adopted father Dave and his fiancé. This Dec. 18 release is rated G and perfect for the little ones.

“Concussion”: You don’t have to be a football fan to enjoy this thriller about the NFL’s concussion scandal. Based on the true story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, played by blockbuster actor Will Smith, “Concussion” explores the discovery of CTE, a concussion-related disease of the brain, and the fallout from the most powerful sports organization in the US. This Christmas Day release is rated PG-13 but the subject matter is probably best suited for adults only.

“Daddy’s Home”: This Christmas Day release features the latest work by can’t-miss comedian Will Ferrell, who teams up with Mark Wahlberg for this humorous holiday flick. Ferrell plays the awkward stepfather trying to replace Wahlberg and fit into a family mess. The usual madness that seems to follow Ferrell ensues and crowds are sure to get a good chuckle.

“In the Heart of the Sea”: Director Ron Howard returns to the big screen with his latest epic thriller. Based on the timeless classic “Moby Dick”, this interpretation features high-tech special effects to bring the action/adventure story to a mass audience. Actor Chris Hemsworth leads a star-studded cast in this PG-13 flick released on Dec. 11.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”: OK, so we used alphabetic order to create dramatic effect because everyone knows about the excitement generated by this highly anticipated release. Expect long lines of fans dressed as Storm Troopers and Skywalkers to form at theaters across the country in hopes of seeing the latest installment in the popular Star Wars trilogy of trilogies. This one is rated PG-13 and will be on every kid’s Christmas movie wish list.

So many movies to see, so little vacation time. But you can kill two birds with one stone by visiting Myrtle Beach for the holidays and catching a new release at the theaters or a timeless classic in the comfort of your room at Bay View Resort.
