02/08/2007
February 8, 2007, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Myrtle Beach National and Patricia Resorts will host the 24th Annual National Retired Military Golf Classic, May 29 through June 2, 2007. The men’s competition will be held at the three Myrtle Beach National courses and The Long Bay Club, while the women’s competition will be conducted at Aberdeen Country Club. Starting times and courses will be announced at the registration to be held at Myrtle Beach National on May 29.
The men’s tournament will consist of 72 holes while the women will utilize a 54-hole competition with the courses and foursomes rotated each day. The registration fee runs $255 for men and $210 for women and includes the rounds of golf, cart fees, awards, special drawings, a Classic golf shirt, a man’s hat or a women’s visor. Also included are tickets to the Tuesday evening cocktail reception at Bay Watch Resort and a Wednesday night show at the Alabama Theater. Only 880 men and 128 women will be accepted with 2006 participants receiving priority registration.
Team and individual prizes will be awarded and include golf clubs, Bose radios, Seiko watches, U Neek Putters, Canon cameras, gift certificates and golf vacations for two. A closest-to-the-pin contest will be held each day and golfers can win a Chrysler car with a hole-in-one. More than $160,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded.
The National Retired Military Golf Classic will again contribute $5,000 to the Fisher House Foundation, a national not-for-profit organization that provides housing for military family members while their loved ones are hospitalized for illness, disease or injury. The Fisher House Foundation has served more than 8,500 families and has made available more than two million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. The Classic has donated over $35,000 to the Fisher House in recent years.
“This is the largest military golf tournament in the world and we are completely comprised of members of the military forces and their spouses,” said General John B. Blount, chairman of the National Retired Military Classic. “Many of our golfers plan their vacation around the tournament and we have quite a few that have participated every year since the inaugural 1983 event. No doubt that the camaraderie is a motivating factor but it’s also a serious competition.”
