End Your Summer With an Affordable (and Unforgettable) Escape to the Grand Strand

Sunrise over the Ocean

With summertime winding down, the clock is ticking on the number of days we have left for the kind of sun-soaked summer fun that can only be found at the beach (and before school is back in session). But the season isn’t quite over yet — there’s still time to get in a Grand Strand getaway, and it’s not to late to snag a vacation deal while doing so.

To send off your summer in Grand Strand style, consider these fun, outdoor-oriented activities that you and your vacation crew could squeeze in with a last-minute vacation in the Myrtle Beach area:

Open Walkway to the Beach

Walk along the beach — Nothing quite says summer like a walk along the beach, the soft sands between your toes as you take in the coastal sights and the welcome sound of the crashing ocean waves. Consider ending your summer with a trek along the beach to collect maritime mementos like seashells and shark teeth. Of course, you could buy them in a gift shop to save yourself some time and effort — but collecting them yourself with family members is a great way to make some lasting memories together.

Aerial View of the Beach

Play in the park — Those seeking solitude and the beauty of nature are sure to find both in abundance at Myrtle Beach State Park, which boasts 300-plus coastal acres (mostly maritime forest) located right along the Atlantic shoreline, plus a mile of undeveloped beaches. This local treasure puts a lengthy list of outdoor activities — including swimming, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, picnicking or simply relaxing under a beach umbrella — within easy reach of Grand Strand vacationers.

See some shelled friends (from a distance) — Between May and October each year, mother sea turtles make their way to the local shoreline to lay their eggs in the sand. And by following the recommendations outlined by local eco-friendly organization C.U.T.E. (South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts), you and your vacation crew could catch a glimpse of this wonder of nature in person. Just be careful not to disturb the turtles or their nests — all sea turtle species that visit our area are threatened or endangered, and we all want this environmental spectacle to keep coming back each year.

Take on the wake — For those interested in checking out the increasingly popular sport of wakeboarding, Shark Wake Park in North Myrtle Beach makes it easy and affordable. Here, wakeboarders don’t need a ski boat — instead, they’re pulled around the on-site lake by a high-tech pulley system. In fact, featuring both a five-tower, full-size cable system offering ramps, sliders and other fun on-the-water features, plus a second, two-tower cable system, this attraction is geared to both pros and those entirely new to the sport. And for the younger set, the attraction is also home to an Aqua Park featuring a floating obstacle course that covers over an acre of water.

Myrtle Beach SkyWheel

Bounce along the Boardwalk — Guests at Bay View on the Boardwalk won’t have to go far to take in this top Myrtle Beach attraction — it’s right in the resort’s backyard. For those strolling along this 1.2-mile-long wooden walkway that runs along the Atlantic shoreline, the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk & Promenade serves up amazing ocean and downtown views at nearly every step. It also features an array of shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities, all in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach.
