Ever taken a winter walk in Myrtle Beach?
There’s something about the winter sun on your face in your favorite vacation place. In weather cold enough for jeans, a hoodie, and a cap, it’s still a beautiful walk. There seem to be more shells and a better shot at finding sharks’ teeth, too.
Fun isn’t hard to find in the winter in Myrtle Beach.
We’ve made a few suggestions here, but it’s also a great time to just hang out in the resort, visit on-site dining, grab a coffee, watch a movie, sleep in, cook in … wow, we could probably make a list of things to do without ever leaving the hotel!
What’s different about the beach in the winter?
Beaches in points south of here might not transform much for the season. Myrtle Beach changes a bit. You’ll notice stronger waves in winter. North of the Carolinas, this change is more pronounced; seasonal variation in prevailing winds can produce larger waves in the winter. This accounts for a noisier ocean and more shells washing ashore late in the year.

See a Christmas Show, Carolina Opry
It’s a good time and tremendous production! This cast is among the most talented in the southeast. The Christmas show is one you’ll want to come back and experience year after year. Catch the seasonal sensation at Carolina Opry through Jan. 6.
Visit the Night of a Thousand Candles, Brookgreen Gardens
Ever seen nearly 3,000 candles and thousands of lights illuminating a beautiful garden? You’re in for an experience. In a place renowned for beauty year-round, this exhibit takes your breath away. Check the website for details. There are more nights but fewer spots than before.
Shop Broadway at the Beach
Amazing in all seasons, Broadway at the Beach carries a holiday feel you’ll want to see for yourself. There’s something for everyone among the shops and restaurants and is the perfect place for a winter walk. Keep the family entertained here!
Drive through the Great Christmas Lights Show, North Myrtle Beach
Check out new lights and displays in the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex. Drive through to see the light show with more than 2 million lights in a 2-mile stretch. There are more than 500 light displays, some as tall as 55 feet! Stop in for cocoa at Santa’s Village afterward.
Spin, eat and shop at Myrtle Beach Boardwalk

Breakfast with Santa, Ripley’s Aquarium
Dec. 19 is your last chance to eat with the jolly elf at the aquarium! Seatings are 8 and 10 a.m. The aquarium is loaded with holiday cheer, and your kids will love the chance to visit Santa in this contactless festive meal. Cost includes aquarium admission, breakfast, a photo, and a craft.
The Polar Bus Express, Market Common

Drive-in movie: Christmas Carol, Thompson Farm
Dec. 18, at 7 p.m., visit Thompson Farm in Conway. Cash-only concessions will be available. Tickets available online; if it doesn’t sell out, there will be tickets at the gate the night of the show. Space limited. Gates open at 5:30. Vehicle spots will be socially-distanced.

It’s a 30-minute Carolina Stories Series film by SCETV. Learn the history of Hobcaw, named for a Native American word meaning “between the waters.” The documentary will cover Native American and African American history, and contemporary conservation efforts. Free.
